Purpose

By Kev Wyke on May 30, 2022

A key principle of adaptabiity is understanding, and keeping right in front of us at all times, our Purpose, the reason why we do what we do, the reason why our organisation exists, that great and wonderful thing that we are setting out to achieve. Purpose is central to understanding who we are, what we are trying to achieve and how we want to go about it. It helps us find meaning in what we do, both as organisations and as individuals, enables us us to have our sights set on a bigger goal and to react to the environment that changes around us enabeling us to adapt our systems to meet those new demands. When we forget our purpose we lose our way!

Thanks for the comments Stephanie, I agree the impact could be massive, but so many organisations pay lip service to purpose. The ones that get this now will generate a gravitational field that will draw the purposeful talent to them.

Thank you Kev for sharing this key principle! I agree and research confirms this. As we come out of this difficult global financial crisis, people of all generations are seeking a role that gives them purpose, that aligns to their ability to deliver on that purpose as it provides the meaning for all they do. This is the way we can connect, as leaders and managers to all employees, customers and consumers of our business world. Further, research conducted by Rainer & Rainer for their book The Millennials found: 9 out of 10 believe it is their responsibility to make a difference, they understand ownership, not relying on preceding generations but making a path now and 3 out of 4 believe it is their role to serve others – this is 75%, imagine the impact on others if they all fulfill this?

Making a difference, serving others are all tied to a clear sense of organizational and individual purpose. Finally, organizations can make this connection to their mission, even if they have lost sight of it and then they can connect achievement of purpose to overall organizational performance through each individual's performance in achieving a purpose-driven expectation.

Purpose gives us the True North of why we do what we do.

And we can use that compass to navigate the changing terrain, the inclement weather, avoiding hazards, visiting interesting places of beauty and wonder, always keeping true to our destination
