Hacking HR to Build an Adaptability Advantage

Quick MIX Brainstorm: Defining Adaptability

Earlier in the hackathon Gary shared his definition of adaptability.  Now it's your turn--we'd like your quick input on the most important things that set a truly adaptable organization apart from the rest.  This "Quick MIX" brainstorm is open to all registered participants to the hackathon (register here).  The best contributions earn a chance to be recognized in the hackathon blog, CIPD's on-line site, and  in the social media channels of CIPD, the MIX.

Adapting within boundaries

Idea by Dave Hearn on May 7, 2022
You got to know what business you are in and what you are not in. Too many organisations dilute their strategy by being too many things to too few customers. Successful organisations play the adapting game well...they observe, they reflect and they change to fit the new rules of the game.

Flexible enough to change with the constantly changing world around...

Idea by Sandhya Sahasranaman on May 7, 2022
An organisation is adaptable if it is flexible enough to embrace the changes in this dynamic environment.

'The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them'. Ernest Hemingway's 9 words of wisdom

Idea by Conor Moss on May 7, 2022
For orgs to be truly adaptable they need to build a culture of trust at all levels, too many orgs eulogise about an engaged workforce yet don't fully trust their employees to make decisions, solve problems and innovate. Orgs will quote times when they have been betrayed and to that I would refer them back to Hemingway's 9 words of wisdom!

Adaptability is all about growth ....where leaders are known for the questions they ask, not just the answers they give…

Idea by Malcolm O'Neal on May 7, 2022
Adaptability is found in sustaining growth and success by intentionally developing people, helping people reach their potential, & building leaders. Adaptability is helping our people leaders to make people development an equal partner with business performance. People development and business performance are not mutually exclusive to this process.

A flexible, open, honest organisation that doesn't let its ego (or that of its people) deter it from success

Idea by Amanda Arrowsmith on May 7, 2022
One of the challenges is the ego - people know best in both their individual field but often feel they do in every field they touch on. Adaptable organisations are ones where ego is set aside and all individuals are treated with respect in their field; people are open, honest and flexible and as a result have 'adult' conversations and approach to change.

Fail means ‘first attempt in learning’

Idea by Kim Spinder on May 7, 2022
Change is already a permanent state, and today´s organisation has to be adaptive and innovative. It’s about creating a new mindset and making innovation part of an organization’s DNA. Just do it, you’ll find out by trial and error, which direction you should go in. An organisation is truly adaptable when fail means ‘first attempt in learning’.

An adaptable organization is free of silos. Aren’t silos things to store corn?

Idea by Edgar Huisman on May 7, 2022
Room to change, learn and be able to think out of your own competency box because there simply is no box or silo. The adaptable organization therefor discontinues maintenance of hierarchical or managerial structure and will visualize its ‘Social Power’ view with cross-relations like “who boosts me”, “a mentor to”, “a thought leader for” etc.

Adaptable organisation:

Idea by Debaraj Dutta on May 7, 2022
I do agree with many others that an adaptable organisation is the one that acts pro-actively towards strengthening the business, rather than fire fighting when faced with continuous change. Therefore, it is ideal to analyse organisational resources and adequately reinforced those in making the organisation adaptable.

Fit FOR Change - the new state of readiness

Idea by Ann Stevenson on May 7, 2022
People offer flexibility and agility needed by adaptable organisations seeking success in unknown territory. They need to be fit FOR change with the attitudes and behaviours that see VUCA as the norm. Only the human capital of an organisation can change both individually and collectively. Everything else requires human intervention to create the change.

Adaptive moves must shape organization, not top-down inputs.

Idea by Frederic J.Leconte on May 7, 2022
Organization is expected a clear chain of command, flawless agreements, strategy alignment. Executives engage troops to be innovative. Problem :troops wait for next orders.Impossible equation :disruptive moves respecting order.... Organization fight dispersion..no good news for diversity.Re-set is a must for genuine adaptability.

An adaptable organization allows people to drive day to day soft, flowing and sustainable transformation

Idea by Brigitte Dubreucq on May 7, 2022
As our business world is changing faster and faster and our future becoming less clear and precise, we need to organize transformation with people (and not for people) and to introduce HR processes built on trust, shared vision, shared values to move together in a soft, flowing and sustainable way.
