The Busting Bureaucracy Hackathon

Phase 3: Ideas for Busting Bureaucracy (Part 1)

A Bottom-Up Greenfield Approach

By Erwin Pfuhler on June 14, 2022

In order to have a streamlined, cost-efficient and powerful organization, we need to think as if we start the organization right now and without any restrictions. We only think of the customer, our employees and other stakeholders. It is not the management team or consultants, who do the design, but all of the employees. Why? When we get everyone involved, we get everyones commitment.
IT is there to meet individuals' needs. Personal dashboard, personal reports, personalized communication just running smoothly in the background.
Even this could create unnecessary overhead (to many on cc, too many interactions with peers and managers). The related cost should be made visible (thanks to IT it is possible). Everyone becomes a profit-center. Serving others will create kind of profit. Requesting support will create costs. This way we will get a broader picture of everyones contributions. For managers this could become tough times, as they request a lot and now have to justify their contributions.

First Steps

"Design" an organization from scratch. Everyone defines his/hers interfaces to get the job done in the best way. Thus we should get a picture of an ideal organization. Now compare it to the present state of your organization. Where is the delta? How can you change it?
The IT system has to be developed accordingly. It must support ultimate flexibility and agility. Open access to any information is key.
